1. Windows Server Overview
In Windows environment, two nodes of computer server are grouped as active/active clustered web servers. Furthermore, Network Load Balancing (NLB) feature has installed and configured in both cluster nodes which is provided by Windows Server 2016. The unicast operation mode is selected for allowing periodic communication of cluster hosts from heartbeat messages. Moreover, HTTP traffic is directed to the virtual IP (VIP) address or cluster primary IP which is assigned to all cluster nodes. NLB driver identical copy is run in parallel on each cluster node to concurrently detect incoming traffic and the drivers arrange on a single subnet for cluster nodes. In addition, the driver on each cluster node acts as a filter between TCP/IP stack and the network adapter’s driver to distribute the incoming network traffic among cluster nodes, this is known as a distributed algorithm.
Windows Server 2016 was used for the domain controller, as it is the most recent major revision of the Windows Server operating system, making it more relevant for current and future use interests. Dauti (2022) noted that Server 2019 superseded 2016, 2019 brought no notable changes that would impact the experiment and is still built upon the same base platform as Server 2016 and Windows 10, making it less popular and likely an unnecessary change that many organizations will opt to skip until Server 2016’s end of life. The client machine operated upon Windows 10 Consumer Edition, which is also the most recent major Windows consumer operating system. The client machine was fully updated for both Windows Security and Windows Defender updates so that the client machine did not become infected and impact the results from the domain controller responses. Realistically, in an enterprise environment, staff machines would be automatically updated through Windows operating system policy, whilst servers and infrastructure machines would be left operational until unexpected downtime forces user interaction.
2. How to Install Hyper-V Role On Windows Server 2016 Step-By-Step
Hyper-V is Microsoft’s hardware virtualization product, which can run versions of computer software known as virtual machines. Each virtual machine (VM) acts like a complete computer, running an operating system and programs. Besides, the simulation process can analyze the DFS Replication system without disturbing the running system and the extent to which this system can be an option as one of the systems that can anticipate data availability (Đorđević et al., n.d.). Following are the procedures. First, set up the PC Workstation to prepare the simulation procedures. Then, after the hardware meets the requirements, should be installed Windows 10 Professional as a host for the type-2 hypervisor. After that, by default on Windows 10 Professional, the virtualization feature is inactive so that the author will install or activate the Hyper-V manager feature for the next stage. Then, create a virtual server environment that would be created on the Hyper-V Manager installed in the previous stage. The VM names are “DC01” as a domain controller server, “FS01” as the first file share server, “FS02” as the second file share server, and “Client01” as a PC that is used to access the file or document sharing.
3. Monitoring and Troubleshooting Servers
In the Monitoring menu, an environment for learning the command operations required for server monitoring is provided. Actions that can be performed while referring to the manual include examining the server log, monitoring network packets using the UNIX “tcpdump” command, examining the service offer and resource usage statuses, and examining the security setting status (Sonawane & Patil, 2022). From the Monitoring menu, exercises for two monitoring types, external monitoring using a client and internal monitoring logged in to the target server, can be targeted at the sample server. Troubleshooting exercises are available for stopping the service-providing program, stopping the program that performs network communication, and security system faults such as the firewall program stoppage and setting the permissions to prevent unauthorized network access. After executing the fault, the abnormal state is examined, and troubleshooting exercises are conducted while referring to the manual.
