History // The Origins of the Modern World
Introduction
Discussing the origins of the Modern World will be discussed in this paper, concentrating on a global and environmental Narrative from the fifteenth to the Twenty-First Century book that elaborates the progressive advantage of the modern society. The period of industrialization is one of the most efficient issues that have led to the evolution of new technological advancements. For this regard, it seeks to value the importance as well as significance of new societies by ensuring more with the productive pattern of community’s interests. In this regard, the historical advantage of the modern society has been playing a vital role for detailing developmental issues that can be highly reliable with the modern society. The chosen book is entitled as “Things Fall Apart” written by a Nigerian author, Chinua Achebe, which was published in 1958. The book concentrates about the pre and post-colonial eras of Nigeria, citing the influence of European explorers during the age of exploration in Africa.
Going through the plot of the book, the author made three sections, in which it encapsulates about the life in Nigeria during the pre-colonial times, concentrating on the family of a fictional character. The personal history is the second segment of the book, elaborating more about the traditions of the family, which represents the native customs of Nigeria in a fictional Nigerian village. The third segment is all about the arrival of British colonialism in Nigeria during the golden age of exploration that changed the Nigerian society forever. Nigeria transformed into a westernized society during the arrival of British colonizers who came into the area in order to expand their maritime territory. Since then, Nigeria established a closer relationship with the European societies, especially when it comes to trade and socialization with the people from the advanced societies until the modern era.
The main issue of the story is all about the lack of educative response by the British colonial government regarding their real aim to colonize Nigeria and change the political and social status of Native Nigerians. This issue has led to bloodshed because there are several native communities who did not seem to understand the real score of colonialists to Nigeria. In return, the native settlers began to fight against the colonizers in an attempt to liberalize their villages. Lack of orientation created misunderstandings between the colonizers and native settlers. Indifferences were the main issues of conflict between the British settlers and the colonizers. Traditional customs were also disbanded by the colonizers, which has been regarded as a critical tradition by the native settlers in Nigeria, prompting another reason to establish an uprising against the colonizers. The period of colonialism in Nigeria is just one of the few areas in Africa that experienced a sudden transformation of their society’s tradition and norms as related by Achebe (1958).
I agree with the author’s presentation from the book because it clearly elaborates more about the issues affecting the society during the period of colonialism. There were conflicting interests that were observed during this time due to the lapses when it comes to empowering the rights of the native settlers who were being colonized by the western societies. It is normal for a certain community to retaliate because the main issue is all about the lack of informative campaign regarding the events and the plans of the colonizers to fully explain their goals in that particular community. As a result of the colonial transformation, there were differences when it comes to the traditions and norms due to the rapid transition between the native and the modern societies that shaped up foreign lands.
