Enhancing Military Operations Through Cybersecurity
Introduction
Cybersecurity experts and professionals play a fundamental role in modern military operations. Understanding such a role in safeguarding sensitive information, keeping critical infrastructure, and warranting operational effectiveness remains relevant in the operation. In the field of military operations, officials always confront the ongoing challenges and threats that require them to provide innovative solutions to reinforce cybersecurity measures. Also, all country leaders these days choose to adopt methods and strategies to defend themselves from various attacks and destructions. Whether these devastations and perils come from digital machinations or physical wars, country frontrunners need to maintain the strengths of their powers to protect their citizens and their nations as well. A few authors and expert researchers provide reliable details on how cybersecurity methodologies and units operate to help the military break potential risks and eliminate threats. Prominent authors, such as Nathaniel D. Bastian, Matthew D. Dinmore, Marie Baezner, and Pavel Sharikov, possess credible data to point to the relevance and significance of cybersecurity tools and units to help the military. Although these authors hold germane information regarding the importance of cybersecurity in the military, they preserve essential details concerning security applications and forces to help the military overthrow the risks and cyber threats.
Problem Statement
Government leaders and military officials must provide effective measures to protect the country and its people from evolving cyber threats, such as data breaches, espionage, and targeting defense systems. In other words, they must work on ways to ensure that these cyberattacks cannot produce damage. Indeed, cybersecurity experts and professionals must exert their efforts to eliminate the risks and threats without compromising national security, upsetting operations, and endangering sensitive information.
Literature Review
The domain and field of cybersecurity become a part of larger military and security applications. Bastian and Dinmore (2023) can confirm this primary contention underscoring the relevance of cybersecurity and its capabilities (p. 2). They maintain that cybersecurity and its process can warrant effective solutions in mathematical optimization to dismantle the key problems. They claim that “cybersecurity experts can help the military create the right model using hierarchical threat structures to consider effective decision strategies from both groups of organizations and their opponents” (Bastian & Dinmore, 2023, p. 2). Bastian and Dinmore (2023) use rhetorical appeals to prove the value of cybersecurity tools and units to defy threats. They assert that cybersecurity and its domain grow as part of their support strategies to help the military. Also, they advance their implied claims that cybersecurity and its tools can challenge attacks and risks online. Moreover, they warrant that cybersecurity as part of wide-ranging military and security applications upholds its capabilities to guarantee effective solution methods in mathematical optimization to dismantle any threats. Bastian and Dinmore (2023) prove that relying on cybersecurity systems, tools, and units can effectively destroy risks and threats using a model with hierarchical threat structures and decision strategies to help the military. Although these cybersecurity systems, tools, and units require higher levels of complexity in mathematical optimization modeling and analysis, they can detect network traffic flows, intrusion detection, and prevention systems, and interconnected human-machine interfaces, as well as automated systems because they possess some attributes, such as “cyber resiliency, network adaptability, security capability, and information technology flexibility” (Bastian and Dinmore, 2023, p. 2). In the end, Bastian and Dinmore provide discussions on the importance of cybersecurity and its attributes asserting the germane requirements needed to assess cybersecurity capabilities.
Another source to explain the importance of cybersecurity in helping the military is the article by Marie Baezner. Baezner’s article provides details on the use of reserve forces in cybersecurity to help the military. In this article, Baezner (2020) uses rhetorical appeals in the form of logic to assert the positive impact of digital transformation. However, she warns about the negative impact of it. She underlines the new criminal and political risks for all countries in the world (Baezner, 2020, p. 8). Also, she claims that country leaders need to develop their national cybersecurity and defense strategies to confront various challenges and warrant effective support strategies to dismantle threats online. She then emphasizes the implied claims that government leaders need to accommodate these cyber reserve forces to help the military officers and their operations. She even warrants the value of cyber reserve forces, especially those who have proper military training and those who possess knowledge in cybersecurity and other tools to help military operations. According to Baezner (2020), “having a cyber reserve force allows the armed forces to save on costs on personnel and training” (p. 8). Therefore, this article is useful in exploring the reason why government officials and policymakers need to pay attention to the importance of cybersecurity.
Besides, Pavel Sharikov’s book discusses newfangled technologies that change the nature of armed conflict. Pavel Sharikov (2023) wants to assert the idea regarding “the most emerging technologies to accomplish political goals, not to destroy the enemies’ armed forces” (p. 143). She mentions that the use of these technologies, such as cyber, AI, drones, and lethal autonomous weapons, can succeed if both local and international governments are willing to participate in the intention to end conflicts and wars. However, she warns these leaders that the development of these technologies can produce a significant impact on national and international security. Sharikov (2023) uses rhetorical appeal to persuade these government leaders to take precautionary measures to combat risks and threats. She even implies her claims that cyber security can potentially help the military to succeed in their operations. The presence of potential online attacks and threats allows these government leaders in all nations to face the challenge of arms control. Using the destructive impact of cyber threats as a support strategy, Sharikov (2023) manages to convince these government leaders to take immediate action against the proliferation of these technologies. These actions are important for country leaders to engage in international rules of engagement on such cutting-edge technologies and find common arguments to ensure peace among countries around the world. Moreover, Sharikov (2023) warrants that cybersecurity helps country leaders build powerful military operations (p. 144). In other words, country frontrunners can defend their nations and their people if they incorporate cybersecurity measures. For that reason, the use of cybersecurity tools remains vital to securing peace and order and ripping those risks and threats to shreds.
Moreover, Gábor’s article mentions the recent emergence of mercenary spyware to use as cyber offensive warfare. Gábor (2023) notes that “this spyware appears to be Pegasus or Russia’s continuing conventional warfare in Ukraine that makes cybersecurity even more precarious” (p. 5). Also, he explores how the private sectors fail to keep up with the recent developments of new technologies to create solutions to cybersecurity issues. Considerable research has been made in the field of discipline; however, “experts in the academia and the private sectors fail to demonstrate the growing importance of security and privacy” (Gábor, 2023, p. 5). In this case, he infers the outcome of this neglect – the significant increase in cyber threats to critical services, as well as infrastructure and human rights. Indeed, this research allows Gábor to expand his research on advanced offensive cyber capabilities and assess the competencies of other groups and sectors to develop solutions to combating future cybersecurity challenges. In other words, Selján Gábor’s article helps explain the function and the relevance of cybersecurity to help the military. The details of this source are useful in discussing the role of cybersecurity. Therefore, this source responds to the discussion of assessing, measuring, and evaluating offensive cyber capabilities and improving cybersecurity capabilities.
Besides, Spătaru and Barcan’s paper discusses and explores the evolving world of cyberspace and technology. The authors of this paper assert the benignant effects of technologies in society. Also, the effects of these technologies can be useful in discussing public safety and national security. Spătaru & and Barcan mention that cyber-attacks and cyber terrorism are two concepts to explore new notions about cyber intelligence, OSINT security, and Cyber risk management. They maintain that different intelligence services, such as the Federal Bureau of InvestigationI, Romanian Intelligence Service, and Federal Security Service cooperate with civilians to ensure the safety of the people and the public. Additionally, they assert that “the lack of awareness of the different types of cyber-attack, such as malware, web-based attacks, phishing, web application attacks, spam, distributed denial of service (DDoS), identity theft, data breach, insider threat, botnets, physical use, theft and loss, damage, information leakage, ransomware, cyber-espionage, industrial espionage and crypto-jacking can promote risks in the cyberspace” (Spătaru & Barcan, 2023, p. 247). Therefore, military officials and other professionals must learn these fields of discipline to provide a safe cyberspace environment. Furthermore, Spătaru & and Barcan’s paper remains useful in exploring the evolving world of cyberspace and technology and its impact on businesses, people, and organizations. This source is relevant to depict the role of government officials and military officers in obtaining skills in cybersecurity to ensure safety in cyberspace. Therefore, this source is useful in the military process.
Moreover, Iryna Svitlak’s article analyzes and explores the presence of cyber-military threats. As well, this article highlights these threats through the prism of assessing the response to cyber-attacks in international law. She uses the scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, content analysis, and the dogmatic method to use an impartial approach to assessing the main issue. She argues that cyberattacks are not limited by state borders. She maintains the problem of determining the subject of responsibility. In this case, the use of the terms “cyberwar” and “cyberattacks” is necessary to reveal the dangerous operations in digital networks. Indeed, this paper covers requirements and approaches to international standards to regulate and ensure security in cyberspace while maintaining international relations. Besides, this source helps explain the relevance of cybersecurity and maintains the definition of cyberattacks, self-defense in cyberspace, and the application of the principle of non-use of force in the digital environment. The author underscores this source as a good piece of document to serve as a foundation for a future global convention to regulate legal relations in cyberspace at the international level. Indeed, this source is useful in stressing solutions to the problems without the party-political will of transnational actors.
Proposal
Government frontrunners and military officers can enforce advanced cybersecurity strategies and technologies tailored to military needs. These needs are indispensable to address the prevailing challenges. In this proposal, this paper concentrates on enhancing cybersecurity in the military through the following measures:
Cyber Defense Systems. Government frontrunners and military officials can work together to develop and use robust cybersecurity systems capable of detecting, mitigating, and responding to cyber threats in real time. These systems can include intrusion detection systems, firewalls, and advanced threat analytics.
Training and Education. Government frontrunners and military officials must offer wide-ranging cybersecurity training programs and sessions to military personnel across all ranks. These training sessions can accentuate awareness, best practices, and incident response protocols. Indeed, continuous education and training programs can make certain to have an attentive and preemptive cybersecurity culture.
Partnerships and Collaboration. Government frontrunners and military officials can nurture alliances and collaborations with cybersecurity experts, technology companies, and academic experts. They can, also, work together to leverage cutting-edge innovations while staying ahead of developing threats. Indeed, these public-private partnerships can improve research, promote development, and endorse the implementation of cybersecurity solutions.
Solution with Evidentiary Support
Addressing the cybersecurity risks and threats requires evidence and other reports to prove positive results. Based on this research, experts and professionals suggest that effective cybersecurity measures can significantly improve military capabilities and resilience:
- Government leaders and military officials see the need for robust cybersecurity defenses and measures as underlined in the 2020 SolarWinds cyberattack to put the weaknesses in government networks in the spotlight.
- The demand to increase the frequency and advancement of cyber attacks targeting military networks and systems is necessary as mentioned in the reports from the Department of Defense.
- Successful implementation of cybersecurity strategies in allied nations, such as Israel and the United Kingdom, has demonstrated tangible improvements in securing military assets and data.
Conclusion
Prioritizing cybersecurity in the military is vital for national security and operational readiness. By implementing forward-thinking technologies, advancing through training, and nurturing partnerships, military officials and their departments can effectively alleviate cyber threats. Aside from that, they can protect their critical assets and preserve superiority in the digital battleground. These country leaders around the world must adopt new methods and strategies to protect themselves from unfamiliar intrusions and threats. The destructions from digital intrigues and other maneuvers can compel country frontrunners to keep their strengths while protecting their nations and their people. Bastian, Dinmore, Baezner, Sharikov, and other experts assert that these cybersecurity tools can help military operations and country leaders perform their duties and roles. In other words, military officials can defend the country from various threats. For that reason, cybersecurity applications and other forces like cyber reserve forces can help the military and its operations to disassemble cyber threats.
