Understanding Human Resource Function

Business // Understanding Human Resource Function

The idea of a human resources department is as old as the concept, which dates back to the 18th century, especially during the Industrial Revolution when champions in management like Charles Babbage and Robert Owen put great emphasis on people for organizational success (Holliday n.d). Still, it was not until the 20th century that a bunch of Babbage’s and Owen’s ideas developed to such a level to result in being professional. In this period, the emphasis moved not only on material stimuli for motivating workers. The developments of the first half of this century, for instance Great Depression and New Deal programs by President F. D. Roosevelt changed employer-employee relations in new university curricula as well as professional organizations that would promote labor relations

As the presence of unions declined in the latter part of that century, organizations had to grapple with talent development and retention issues; thereby prompting personnel departments to help them handle such endeavors. These initiatives in the 1950s led to many modern HR strategies that we see today. In addition, technological developments in the second half of this century redefined work and employers realized that their people are also valuable assets. Therefore, the now referred to modern human resources or” human capital management”, as a function developed at the end of that century (Federation of European Employers, 2011).

The employees serve as the pillar of each business that fares well and, hence, indicates how essential it has proved for efficient human resource management. Covering a wide range of activities, the HR department is involved in creating an environment where employees feel safe, appreciated, and well cared for. Exceptional HR management is necessary for the smooth functioning and continuous development of such a department.

Fundamentally, human resources can be defined as the department within an organization that mediates between workers and leadership. HRM embraces the management of these divisions, covering an array of functions, duties, and elements crucial for firm operations as well as employee welfare. Seasoned managers must provide excellent leadership in every aspect of human resources.

Usually, HR officers in managerial positions control essential activities like recruitment as well as personnel hiring and training. This involves the recruitment of candidates with specific job requirements, screening potential hires, and managing all aspects related to onboarding a new team member into an organizational culture. Additionally, human resource managers act as catalysts in fostering diversity within the workplace; educating staff about their roles and expectations of them while supporting healthy relationships between employees and organizational management.

One of the most important aspects of organizational functioning is the human resource department which takes care of personnel safety, well-being, and contentedness (Imm, 2021). By employing effective HR practices, workplace policies are made to ensure the implementation of essential protective measures and provide ways for interpersonal issue resolution among team members minimizing risks both on behalf of a company as well as its workforce.

First of all, HR managers are tasked with numerous duties most importantly the responsibilities that focus on promoting employee well-being. First, constant communication with employees and effective management of employee relationships plays an integral part in this role. The broad goal of strategic HRM is to develop an atmosphere where employees feel safe and respected at all times.

The role of the HR department in risk management and compliance oversight is vital, as they work closely with organizational leadership. HR managers should be conversant with business law, ethics, and statistics and can help in problem-solving activities to minimize the risks within a given organization. All in all, the core of human resource management is that both or company and employees should benefit. Statistical analysis, knowledge of the law, and constant improvement of corporate policies and practices are tools that HR professionals use as stewards for risk management to promote a suitable work environment standard (Imm, 2021).
